DU Passerelle – Students in exile

The Diplôme Universitaire Passerelle – Students in Exile, accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), welcomes 30 students in exile each year. Candidates must hold at least a qualification equivalent to the French Baccalauréat and wish to begin or resume higher education studies in France.

This program offers intensive training in French as a Foreign Language (FLE), as well as activities and workshops designed to ensure successful integration into higher education. It is open to students at level A1/A1+, selected after a placement test and an individual interview. The program aims for students to reach A2 by the end of the first semester and B1 (or even B2) by the end of the second semester.

The program is managed by the Language Center of Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, which obtained the Qualité FLE Label in December 2021.

This diploma is supported by the Robert de Sorbon Foundation, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the Regional and Interdepartmental Directorate for the Economy, Employment, Labor and Solidarity (DRIEETS) Île-de-France, the MEnS network (Migrants in Higher Education), and the City of Paris.

Program Structure

  • Semester 1 (October–December): 11 weeks, with 15 hours of French per week, plus 32 hours of independent work on the Hybrid’action™ platform.
  • Semester 2 (January–May): 14 weeks, with 15 hours of French per week, plus 30 hours of independent work on the Hybrid’action™ platform.

Each semester is complemented by sports and cultural activities, as well as orientation and academic integration workshops (50 hours per semester), including:

  • Workshops at the university library and with the orientation service (VOIE)
  • Physical education and sports activities
  • Cultural events and activities

French courses are coordinated by one of the program’s teaching staff.

Classes take place every afternoon on the Sorbonne Paris Nord campus. Regular attendance is mandatory, as it is essential for the success of the program.

At the end of the academic year, students may sit the DELF (Diplôme Élémentaire de Langue Française) free of charge.
